Extreme Conditions Demand Extreme Sealing Solutions

Many manufacturing and processing applications involve temperatures and chemicals that exceed the remit of normal rubber seals. In these instances it is often necessary to employ more resilient materials. Two of the best known fluoroelastomers used in high temperature seals are Kalrez® and Viton®, both produced by DuPont Performance Elastomers.

Kalrez®

Kalrez® is the leading perfluoroelastomer in today's market. O-rings and seals made from Kalrez® are able to withstand a vast range of electronic- and industrial-grade chemicals, making them some of the most reliable and long-lasting components available.

Widely used in the Oil & Gas, Aerospace, and Food & Pharmaceutical industries, Kalrez® has proven itself ideal for use in highly aggressive chemical processing, petroleum applications and semiconductor wafer processing.

Kalrez® is the only perfluoroelastomer (FFKM) whose entire manufacturing process, from the raw material stage to the finished product, takes place entirely in dedicated Kalrez® factories. These facilities are operated by DuPont Performance Polymers and approved to ISO 9000 and AS 9100 standards.

Applications - Oil & Gas

Kalrez®, like the similar material Viton®, is an ideally suited fluoroelastomer for aggressive downhole applications, helping to extend the time between machine repairs.

Kalrez® parts are resistant to over 1,800 chemicals, solvents and plasmas, and can tolerate temperatures as high as 327°C (620°F). Components made from Kalrez® offer outstanding resistance to explosive decompression, resistance to extrusion in high-pressure scenarios and superb chemical resistance to amines, sour gas, drilling muds, high pH fluids and caesium-potassium formates.

Applications - Food & Pharmaceutical

Many sealing applications in the food and pharmaceutical industries demand absolute cleanliness. While the go-to material in these situations has traditionally been PTFE, parts made from Kalrez® perfluoroelastomer can offer the same universal standards of cleanliness and resistance to chemicals along with true elastomeric sealing capabilities, giving it a clear advantage over PTFE.

Parts made from Kalrez® 6221 and 6230 are fully FDA compliant. These parts are idea for situations that demand contact with highly pure and aggressive water systems (WFI). After repeated steam cycling, they exhibit very low loss of mechanical properties, as well as low swell and low contamination from extractables.

Viton®

For demanding process environments, no fluoroelastomer is better suited than Viton®.

DuPont carries the market's widest range of high performance polymers for use with high temperature applications and unforgiving underhood situations. Viton® in particular is a trusted fluoroelastomer for o-rings, seals, hoses and tubing.

High temperature seals such as Viton® fluoroelastomers and Kalrez® perfluoroelastomers can increase component lifespans and extend the meantime between repairs in aggressive downhole applications. Viton® flue duct expansion joints also provide exceptional performance when exposed to corrosive gases and high temperatures.

It is important, therefore, for engineers and buyers to specify DuPont Viton® when purchasing o-rings, seals and other components.

Applications - Oil and Gas

The oil and gas industry has found many applications for Viton®. The fluoroelastomer has been utilised in operations such as production, exploration, refining and upgrading for over thirty years. During this time, Viton® has been used to solve critical problems that other elastomers such as Nitrile and EPDM failed to resolve, with Viton® providing the highest level of sealing performance.
